Water use has a historic tendency to be forgotten when costs and carbon are being considered in the home – this was highlighted in our At Home With Water report this summer.

The report, which highlights the importance of watching what we use in our kitchens and bathrooms, was generated with a large amount of assistance from our interactive Water Energy Calculator tool. But popular and useful as it may be, there is always room for improvement. And improve it has. We’ve updated the Calculator, meaning it’ll now have full functionality on all mobile and tablet devices. So whether you’re static or mobile, you can enjoy a tailored water report for your home just the same – and you can even tweet or Facebook the results right away.

Elsewhere in water efficiency news, EU plans to standardise toilet flushes have caused a bit of a stir. The debate centres on how much variation there is across Europe in flushing, and how much of a ‘cultural issue’ the flush is. These arguments aside, Britain is the second biggest flusher on water volume, behind only Luxembourg, so perhaps a more widespread roll-out of more economical systems might be beneficial.

Southern Water has also released some interesting stats, as it published its 25-year water efficiency strategy. It found that 92 per cent of customers polled support water efficiency efforts; with 96 per cent backing water re-use specifically. It seems that the water efficiency message is really starting to get through. Try tapping your home’s water credentials into the calculator to see why.
